World Trade Center - Ground Zero - Now and Then!
In the case of an explosion above the ground, ground zero refers to the point on the ground directly below the detonation.
After September 11 2001, "Ground Zero" is generally understood to mean the site of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
